Hi guys!! I'm new to kayak fishing.....

Postby kingpin4546 » Wed Mar 03, 2010 7:51 pm

Hi guys,
Just wanted to say make a post here to say Hi to everyone here. I just bought a new Ocean Kayak Prowler Big Game this week and am really excited to get out and give this thing a try. I live in Port Huron and have been fishing around the area on and off for about 30 years now. I do get up north with my dad and brother about 3 times a year for some fishing.. Always good times :) ...
I'm sure over the next few weeks I'll have some questions on setups for my "Battleship" (I've seen the Big Games called that) before she makes the water for the first time. I have been reading a lot of forums on different type of setups and seen a lot of video's. It's been a lot of fun so far just doing the research and exploring this new addiction :)

Todd |welcome| to MKF.
I have a Big Game and it can handle about everything, even a jet ski running over the bow of it. |cap1|

You will have a great team with that yak. |kayak|

Wow really? It's good to know I picked a good boat then. I did a lot of research before I ordered, I am a bigger guy I wanted to make sure that what ever i got would hold my fat butt LOL. It was rather interesting during my research to go from a $350 rig to a $1,000 rig lol. I will be posting a walk around vid on you tube soon so I can get some feedback on what I have done so far.

I really wanted to head out with you guys for the Harsens Island fishing trip but I just don't have the gear for cold water yet. I'm sure I will be down that way when the water warms up a bit |vince|

The $350 rigs are OK and will do in a pinch, but you really want something that is more suited for the job. Many people make the mistake of buying a small kayak for the sake of convenience, ease of transporting, etc., only to at a later date upgrade to a proper fishing kayak. When buying a kayak pay close attention to the weight rating and make sure that number is around twice your weight. If your weight is close (around 50 lbs) to the max capacity of the kayak it is overweighted and will not function optimally. The stability suffers, more effort to paddle, etc.

The Big Game is a good choice.....

I did the same thing, a buddy of mine (rhc here on the forum) convinced me that I would want to up-grade later and it was better to go whole hog to start with. Congrats on the new boat, looks great!
